Free Social Skills Seminar - New Jersey - HI-STEP Summer Camp

Summer can be a very difficult time for children with Asperger's Syndrome, High Functioning Autism, ADHD, learning disabilities, anxiety and other conditions, many of whom cannot participate in typical summer programs or camps because of poor social skills.

Parents, educators and mental health providers are invited to a free 90-minute workshop to learn about best practices for summer social skills training. Attendees will learn: How the summer months can be used to teach and maintain social skills for children with disabilities; best practices to teach and generalize social skills; and strategies to help children make and keep friends.

Attendees will also learn about HI-STEP (Helping Improve Social Skills Through Evidence-based Practices), a 6-week day program designed to help develop children's social skills, problem-solving skills and emotional-behavioral skills through group activities, individualized attention, sports and recreational activities, creative arts and academic-related activities. With locations in Pennington, NJ and Scotch Plains, NJ, HI-STEP is designed for children with social skills difficulties, many of whom attend the program as part of their Extended School Year (ESY) programming.

The 2012 workshop will be offered at six locations this spring: Piscatway, NJ on February 29, Flemington, NJ on March 1; Clark, NJ on March 7; East Hanover, NJ on March 14; Newtown, PA on March 15; and Hamilton, NJ on April 19.

  • When selling, do not put your home address in your ad.
  • To avoid scams, buy and sell with people you can meet locally, in person.
  • When meeting with someone you don't know, meet in a public place. If that's not possible, have a buddy with you. Also, carry a cell phone; if you feel unsafe, you can call a trusted friend, and stay on the line.
  • Never give out financial or private information like account numbers, PayPal login, or social security number.
  • If an offer sounds too good to be true, it is. Walk away!
